This parade is representative of a series of experiments I have been conducting using code, typography, graphic design, animation, loops, and automation. One challenge here is to bridge the structured, mathematical nature of code with the more expressive challenge of a classic animated walk cycle. Each walker is generated entirely from code (Processing/Java) and consists of a series of loops stacked and embedded inside and on top of each other. All of the motion in the walkers are dictated by simple sine wave and loop equations, slightly offset from each other in time. Because they are generated in code, the ability to duplicate, repeat, and remix blocks of code open up the possibilities of quickly and easily creating a vast number of walkers within a finite system of objects and loops. There are also lessons here that I have learned from my typographic and motion project, Space Type Generator. STG is an open-source kinetic type generator I have been working on for the past few years. Kiel Mutschelknaus is a motion and generative designer from Maryland. Kiel's studio focuses on crafting generative tools to create bespoke typography, motion, and imagery. Space Type Generator (STG) is an open-source tool that allows users to create their own kinetic type experiments. STG has been used around the world for many creative projects, from music videos to magazine covers, to large scale murals. Clients include Apple, Spotify, Nike, IBM, YouTube, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker.
