Have you ever imagined the forms and strokes of Type can be transformed based on the volume and pitch of sound?
Sound Type is a creative project initiated by graphic designer Jonathan Mak. By changing sound frequencies and visual elements through electronic systems, texts in various shapes are generated. These texts dynamically respond to wavelength vibrations, creating an intriguing sound-text form that varies in curvature, thickness, motion, and arrangement.
Jonathan has created an immersive video work, "Common Sounds," for the TypePOP Show. Using "Sound Type" as a creative medium, he transforms the voices and written words of Thai children and community members in Kowloon City into dynamic and lively type forms. He also specially designed the "Sound Type Radio" installation for the exhibition, allowing viewers to interact and understand the creative process.
Jonathan will come to Gate33 Gallery on 19th May to share his creative principles and process behind the video work "Common Sounds," his experience interacting with the community members from Kowloon City, and the concept and design of "Sound Type" Radio.
